Why Is Your Lexus Car Heater Blowing Cold Air?

The morning drive in your Lexus should be an enjoyable, comfortable one. It's your first opportunity of the day to sit in your luxury automobile, and it should be a glorious experience. Unfortunately, on a cold day, when you turn your heater on, you might find it blowing cold air. Now what?

Some of the possible causes for a heater blowing cold air are referenced below. To be on the safe side, it's best to have a certified Lexus technician give your vehicle a check-up so the problem can be remedied. You deserve to have a nice, cozy, warm ride in your Lexus.

The Blend Door Is Jammed

In order for heat to get to the vehicle's interior from the heating system, a feature referred to as a blend door is used. If it's jammed, you're going to get cold air blowing because the air is bypassing the heater core. Replacement of the blend door is likely necessary.

Problems with the Heater Core

Resembling a compact radiator, the cooling system referred to as a heater core carries coolant and is made from metal tubing. Coolant released heat is dispersed via fans. If there are problems with your heater core, the following may occur:

  • Your vehicle is quickly using its coolant
  • Inside the cabin, you notice fog
  • Overheating of the engine
  • An odor that is sweet smelling

Manual cleaning of the heater core’s exterior and a flush out of the clogged core passage may help fix the problem. A new heater core may be needed as well.

Problems with the Thermostat

Even after the engine has heated up, if your thermostat stays on "C" (cold), it may be malfunctioning. Once the engine is warm, if the thermostat can't signal that, heat won't be provided to the heater core because coolant won't be sent there. Cold air will blow.

To get your heater working again, a new thermostat must be installed.

Coolant Level Is Low

Most people think that overheating prevention is the sole purpose of coolant. While that is partly true, it also supports the heating system. If your system doesn't contain enough coolant, cold air will blow into your car from the heater core.

Top off your coolant if you notice that the level is lower than it is supposed to be. If you just recently refilled your coolant and notice this problem, there could be a leak. If you're not comfortable checking for leaks, have a mechanic look at the system for you.
