When Should You Pump Your Lexus Tires?

Is there a steadfast rule that dictates how frequently your vehicle's tires should be filled? Or is it more dependent upon, when you check your tires, whether they’re low? How do you know if they’re low?

If you're wondering how often you need to pump Lexus tires, keep reading.

Vehicle Tires

Once upon a time, people checked the pressure of their tires periodically using a tire gauge. Many, in fact, carried one in their glove compartment. Today, however, keeping tires properly filled and checking the pressure is far less troublesome thanks to technology. When your tires need air, your vehicle can tell you. This doesn't mean, however, that technology can be relied upon 100%.

We are going to take a closer look at the air pressure in your tires, filling them, and checking them.

The temperature outside can have everything to do with the air pressure in your tires. In winter, you'll notice the most fluctuation. An air pressure drop of as much as five PSI (pounds per square inch) can be experienced during a cold snap. If not corrected, major issues can result. What seems like a slight drop ends up being pretty drastic when you consider that between 30 and 40 psi is the average inflation recommendation for most tires.

Pressure Check Frequency

Tires tend to expand in summer heat. Compared to winter, the weather/temp impact won't be as severe. About once a month, you might want to check your tire pressure, however. Every month or so, you can lose about one psi.

At the very least, once a month in winter, check your tires. You can rest a little easier if your vehicle is equipped with a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system). Once the pressure gets to a certain point, the light comes on and tires are checked/filled.

Loss of Air Pressure

Besides the weather, why might tires lose their pressure? Here are some reasons to check out if you're constantly losing pressure in one or more of your tires:

  • The impact that results from hitting curbs or running over large objects can cause tire pressure loss.
  • You may lose air pressure in your tires due to leaking cores and valve stems.
  • Punctures can cause either a fast or slow air pressure leak. One of the most common is running over a nail you probably never even saw.

Many of today's gas stations have air pumps equipped with pressure gauges. This eliminates the need for the tire gauges that became so popular years ago. While air is free in some locations, you may end up paying for air in other circumstances.
