What Should You Do When Your Lexus Brake Light Comes On During Driving?

You’re traveling down the road and suddenly one of your dashboard warning lights comes on. It's the brake light. Now the question arises, what do you do if your Lexus brake light comes on during driving?

First things first: What is the function of the brake light? This, as with so many lights on your dashboard, is a warning indicator. It may have detected that your brake system is malfunctioning or your brake fluid level is low. Though it isn't time to panic, this does require immediate attention because it could lead to major problems with your brakes or indicate there is already one occurring. Schedule a maintenance appointment with your Lexus shop right away.

Is It Time to React To Your Brake Light Coming On?

If the brake light on your Lexus dashboard comes on, it should not be ignored. The fact that, while you're driving, the light came on for no apparent reason points to a major issue somewhere in the brake system. It could be as simple as a low level of brake fluid. But it could also point to something that cannot be fixed quickly and easily. Do not hesitate to schedule maintenance for your Lexus if the brake warning light comes on.

Servicing Your Lexus Brake System/Brake Light

When your brake light comes on, there are certain things you can do to check the issue. First of all, what was your car doing when the warning light lit up? When you start your vehicle, most of the warning lights automatically go on. But if the brake light doesn't turn off after a few seconds, don't drive your vehicle. Shut off the engine and check for problems:

  • Check the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. There are maximum and minimum markings on the side. New brake fluid should be added to the reservoir if the level is too low.
  • How far can you depress the brake pedal? If it goes all the way to the floor, there may be air in the brake system or a leak in the system. It's a good thing if the pedal feels firm.
  • Check to make sure you haven't engaged the parking brake.
  • Sensors and brake pads are sometimes used to let a driver know when brake pads are getting low. This is not present in every vehicle. But, if it is, it could mean it's time to get those brake pads changed.

Don't panic if, while you're driving, the brake light comes on. More than one hydraulic system is contained within your vehicle. Though it may take a little longer than usual to stop, pull to the side of the road and do so. Contact a dealer or tow truck and have your vehicle taken to a Lexus repair facility.

Brake System Maintenance Tips

Here are six tips to help you take good care of your brakes:

  • When you have your brakes serviced, stick with Lexus parts. Quality matters.
  • If you notice the car ahead of you braking unnecessarily, you may not want to follow suit automatically. But make sure you have plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • Whenever possible, before applying the brakes, coast to slow down by lifting your foot off the accelerator.
  • Watch and listen for warning signs. Your brakes may make noise, pointing to a problem.
  • Regularly check your brake fluid.
  • Once per year, have a qualified mechanic check your brake pads, discs, etc.
