How To Turn Off Lexus Passenger Airbag

Airbags are an essential feature in your Lexus vehicle to ensure your safety and that of your passengers. However, there may be scenarios where your passenger airbag needs to be turned off, such as when there’s no passenger in the front seat. In this guide, we share with you how you can turn off your Lexus passenger airbag.

When Do Passenger Airbags Need to be Turned Off?

In most cases, your Lexus passenger airbag will not need to be turned off. However, in the following scenarios, it can be best to do so:

  • If your front passenger has a medical condition and their doctor has advised that it’s best for the airbag to be turned off
  • If you have a rear-facing child seat installed in the front passenger seat
  • When there’s no passenger in the front seat

You may also find a reminder sticker on the front passenger visor alerting you to the dangers of activating an airbag with a rear-facing child seat. When in doubt, always go back to your owner’s manual for guidelines on what to do.

How to Deactivate the Passenger Airbag

Before deactivating the passenger airbag in your Lexus, it is important to ensure that the ignition is switched off. This will help to prevent any malfunctioning. In most vehicles, you will be able to find a Passenger Airbag Cut Off Switch (PACOS) on the dashboard towards the passenger side. This can also be located in the glovebox or towards the side of the dashboard, depending on the model of your vehicle.

You will need a key in order to activate and deactivate the passenger airbag. This helps to prevent accidental activation or deactivation, as well as ensuring that unauthorized persons are not able to change the settings at will. When you have successfully deactivated the passenger airbag, the relevant control light on your dashboard will illuminate as an indication.

Things to Take Note of

If there’s no PACOS switch in your vehicle, chances are you have an older model. In that case, children in rear-facing child seats and passengers with medical conditions that require the airbag to be deactivated should always travel in the backseat. Keep in mind that with a front-facing child seat, the passenger airbag should not be deactivated. Remember to reactivate the airbag when a passenger who requires it is going to occupy the front seat.
