How To Solve A Lexus Transmission Failure

There are a number of problems that can arise where automobile transmissions are concerned. In the worst case scenario, you may need your transmission replaced. On the other hand, there are some minor problems that can be remedied on your own.

Here, we are going to look at the most common types of Lexus transmission failure issues and what to do about them. Ultimately, if you are having severe problems with your transmission, it's time to turn to a certified Lexus service technician. They'll get your vehicle back up and running at peak performance levels in no time.

Noises and/or Whining

Though humming, buzzing, and whining are the most common noises for transmissions, there can be more. The sounds are usually clunkier, sharper, and louder if you have a manual transmission. You could be low on transmission fluid if you notice whining or humming coming from a vehicle with an automatic transmission. More serious problems may be signified by a clunking noise.

Below, you'll find out a little more about checking fluid levels, adding fluid, and stop-leak products.

Failure to Engage

If your vehicle will not engage, a number of transmission issues could be to blame. There may be air in the system, your clutch fluid may be to blame, etc. You may be able to bleed the clutch if you experience this problem. After the air has been released, fluid should be brought back up to the proper level and you should be able to re-engage the clutch. You may choose to use a stop-leak product to prevent future leaks.

Slipping

As transmission problems go, this is one of the most serious. Your car may not stay in gear dependably if you're experiencing slippage. If you find your vehicle spontaneously shifting into neutral or slowing down when you're driving, you may have a slipping transmission. Consequences can be relatively dire. Anti-slipping additives are on the market, but before you take your car out on the road again, test it in a parking lot or similar area to see if the product did the trick.

This anti-slipping product may buy you more time, but you should get your transmission checked by a professional.

Fluid Leak

If you notice a bright red fluid leaking from your engine, it may be from your transmission. It's probably oil if the color is black. Green or blue could be washer fluid or antifreeze. You may try to stop the leak with a good quality "stop-leak transmission additive" when you bring your fluid level back to normal. A mechanic may be required, however, if after this, you still have leaking.

Burning Smell

If, when you're driving, you notice a burning smell, it's cause for concern. Check for engine overheating due to a coolant problem. If that's not the cause, you may have overheating transmission fluid. Make sure the fluid level is at the proper point and you're using good quality transmission fluid. You may need to put high-quality transmission fluid in after draining and flushing the system first. There are stop-leak products available, as well.

"Check Engine"

The dreaded "check engine" light may come on if you’re experiencing any number of problems, your transmission included. So you can determine what the problem is, bring your vehicle to a mechanic.

Dragging Clutch (Standard Transmission)

If, when your engine is shifting gears, you notice a grinding noise and the engine is struggling, your clutch may be dragging. When you press the clutch, the flywheel isn't being disengaged by the clutch disc. This repair is relatively inexpensive because there is just a bit too much clutch pedal slack. This is best done by a mechanic.
