How To Fix High Lexus Fuel Consumption

If you ask an automotive service technician what one of the most frequently asked questions is, they're likely to say that it has to do with whether it's safe to drive a car with a fuel leak. But what causes people to think their vehicle is leaking fuel? If you're experiencing particularly high Lexus fuel consumption, you'll want to get to the bottom of it sooner than later.

If your Lexus is leaking fuel, what might be the cause? How will you know, in the first place, that you have a fuel leak? If you do have one, should you drive the car? After all, gasoline can start on fire in a heartbeat. Nobody wants an engine fire!

Do You Have a Fuel Leak in Your Lexus?

If you think, perhaps, your Lexus may be leaking fuel, the following signs and symptoms could help you make a more definitive analysis:

Is There Moisture Under Your Vehicle?

More likely than not, if the fuel leaking from your vehicle is doing so very slowly, it will evaporate quickly, before you even notice it. If, however, the ground beneath your vehicle appears wet or damp, and the car has been parked there for some time, you could have a problem. Familiarize yourself with your gas tank location, and then pay close attention as to whether or not you have any kind of fluid on the ground underneath it. If you see fluid, you might have a leak in your gas tank.

Can You Smell Fuel?

Few things in this world smell like gasoline. Which is a good thing because you'll know whether or not that's actually what you smell, should you detect an odor coming from underneath your car, the engine, the rear end of your car, etc.

If you smell gas during the following times, you may have a fuel leak:

  • As you approach your parked vehicle
  • When your car is at a stop, idling
  • When your vehicle is traveling down the road

Frequently, before noticing any visible leaks, people will smell gasoline first.

Is Your Fuel Level Dropping Inexplicably?

When you're driving your vehicle, your fuel gauge levels should go down. That's a fact. However, if it feels like you're using more fuel than before, your car may be leaking fuel. If you're having to fill the tank more often than usual, or you’re not getting the kind of mileage you expect, you have to find out where that gas is going – or have a service technician figure it out.

Here's another scenario: Your car has been parked for a significant amount of time. When you start the engine again, the fuel level is lower than when you turned the engine off! That's a very good indicator your vehicle is leaking fuel.
