How To Fix A Lexus Airbag Warning Light

One of the greatest advantages of a Lexus, aside from the absolute luxury, is that they are dependable. But, as with anything, things can go awry every now and then. Warning lights are one of the things that no driver wants to see flash on their dashboard. Fortunately, these lights are frequently exactly that – a warning. It's letting you know something is either about to happen or is newly occurring and should be taken care of immediately. So what about the warning light for your airbags?

If it goes on, is there a way to fix a Lexus airbag warning light? What does it mean when it goes on?

Is It Time to Check Your Airbags?

Oh no! Your airbag warning light just went on. What does that mean?. It is an indication that somewhere in the supplemental restraint system of your vehicle, there is a problem. In the event of a collision, one or more airbags may not inflate if this warning light comes on.

There may be problems with the SRS module, crash sensor, or other components involved in the airbag system. Here are five basic reasons for an airbag light to come on:

  • The airbag system has not reset (usually following an accident)
  • Water damage
  • Small accident (such as a fender bender)
  • An issue with your seatbelt
  • The airbag has been deactivated

Fixing Your Lexus Airbag Warning Light

If your Lexus airbag warning light comes on, there are a couple of things you can do. First of all, check to see if your airbag system has been turned off or deactivated. If it is, you may not have done it yourself. There are reasons it can occur without you knowing it.

It is possible, from your home garage, to reset your airbag light. If all else fails, take your car to a mechanic or dealership to have the light reset and to check for problems. Try this first:

  • Into the ignition, place your key and turn it to the “on” position.
  • Once the airbag light comes on, it usually shuts off after about seven seconds. Once it does, turn off the ignition and wait a few seconds. Repeat this step several times. This may reset your light.

If this fails, but you still want to do it yourself, you will need a special, computerized, handheld tool. These are available at auto parts stores.

Airbag Maintenance Tips

Basically speaking, airbags can be maintained or they may have to be completely replaced. Airbags don't expire in modern vehicles. For the lifetime of your car, they are designed to last. If the car is 10 years old or more, it's a good idea to get the airbag system checked. Following that, every two years.
