How To Clean Your Lexus Engine

Most engines, after operating tirelessly year after year, tend to get pretty dirty. While you may be cleaning the inside of your engine with high-end fuel, what can you do about your engine’s exterior?

Here, we are going to include some information as to how to clean your Lexus engine. Please keep in mind that models and makes differ greatly, so a procedure that works for one vehicle may not work for another vehicle. This is meant as nothing more than a basic set of guidelines.

If you have any questions about how your engine should be cared for, cleaned, etc., your best bet is to contact your local Lexus dealer, or talk to someone from their service team. More often than not, they're happy to answer your questions – especially if you contact the helpful representatives of Prestige Lexus.

Cleaning Your Engine

Choose a warm day for this project if possible. A day with a slight breeze, low humidity, and pleasantly warm temperatures. After cleaning, these conditions will help your engine dry.

  • Allow the engine to cool by flipping up the hood if it has been running recently. About 15 minutes of cooling time should be sufficient. Why? Spraying your engine with cold water while it's hot could cause rapid contraction which could result in damage. What's more, you may get burned by hot engine components.
  • Under the hood, remove plastic covers. Wash them separately. On the battery, remove the negative terminal. That way, if electric components get wet, they won't be damaged. If you prefer, take out the battery.
  • Any sensitive electrical components should be covered with a plastic bag (engine control unit, ignition wires, battery, etc.). You may also want to cover the air intake, unless you can be extremely careful.
  • With degreaser, spray the entire engine compartment thoroughly. Cover every square inch.
  • You might need to scrub some areas, depending on how dirty your engine is. Do not use metal bristles. Choose a synthetic small brush or an old toothbrush. If you need to, add more degreaser for areas that are particularly covered with caked on dirt and oil.
  • Use the light setting on your power washer to rinse the engine. If you don't have a power washer, you can use a standard hose. The entire compartment should be rinsed, washing away all the degreaser, working from the back to the front. Once again, try to avoid spraying areas that won't dry easily and avoid spraying electrical components.

Time To Dry

  • Drying is easier with compressed air. To remove excess water, it can blast air into all the crannies and spaces. Otherwise, use a regular shop towel to wipe down whatever you can. You may even get off a little more dirt.
  • Remove all the bags you had covering sensitive parts and reinstall your battery’s negative terminal (and plastic caps and covers you removed).
