How To Change Your Lexus Key Battery

There will come a time when your Lexus key fob runs out of battery. You may be wondering how to change it when that happens. We share with you some a quick step-by-step guide in this article.

Conventional Ignition Key with One Screw

Before you start changing the battery on your key, look up the owner’s manual of your vehicle to determine what type of battery you will need as a replacement. Below is a step-by-step guide on changing the battery of your Lexus ignition key with one screw:

  • Remove the screwheads on the back of the key.
  • Use a screwdriver to remove the screw and store it somewhere safe while you proceed. Gently shake the back to remove it from the rest of the key and lift it off.
  • You will find that there are two smaller screws holding the inside of the key together. Screw them off to reveal the internal battery.
  • Gently remove the old battery and replace it with the new one. Then, replace the two small screws and hook the back into place.

Conventional Ignition Key with Two Screws

Besides a replacement battery, you will need a paperclip, a small coin and a Phillips screwdriver if your key fob has two screws. Below is a guide on changing the battery of your Lexus ignition key with two screws:

  • Unscrew both screws and pull the back off.
  • “Coin open” should be printed on the inside of the key, beside a small hole. Once you locate it, insert a coin into the hole while holding the key firmly in the other hand. You will then see the battery.
  • The next step is to pop out the battery using the paperclip and insert the replacement. Clip the interior of the key back together, making sure that the buttons with the holes are lined up with the exterior of the key.
  • Now, pop the back of the key back into place and return the two screws to their original position.

Smart Key

If you have a smart key, you are in luck as the process of changing its battery is significantly easier. Follow the steps below to change the battery of your Lexus smart key:

  • Slide the release button to release the metal key. After you have pulled it from the fob, you will find a small indent in the key.
  • Insert the flat part of the key into the indent and twist to reveal the circuit board and battery.
  • Pop the battery out with a paperclip and insert the replacement. Ensure that it is lined up with the circular marking on the interior of the fob before clicking the other half over it.
  • Replace the metal key in the fob.
