How To Change Lexus Windscreen

Whether your shattered Lexus windscreen needs replacing, or you simply want an upgrade, changing your Lexus windscreen is not a difficult process. Although you can technically do it yourself at home, getting the right materials and equipment might be expensive and time consuming, making this a job best left to the professionals. With that in mind, here is exactly what happens when your Lexus windscreen is replaced.

Removing the Trim

Firstly, the old trim holding the old windscreen in place is removed. This is similar to the process of removing a window at home, where you’d need to remove the caulking around the window first before taking out the windowpane. To remove the trim more efficiently, a razor is often used, and this will loosen the windscreen.

Removing the Old Windscreen

After the trim is removed and the windscreen is loosened, it becomes easier to lift the windscreen away from your Lexus vehicle. Sometimes, large suction cups with handles are attached to the windscreen to pop it out while keeping it intact in one piece.

Cleaning the Pinch Weld

A pinch weld is the gap between the windscreen and your vehicle’s body. As the name suggests, its function is to pinch the windscreen’s edges. Over time, dirt and dust can build up in the pinch weld, so after the old windscreen is removed, we need to clean out and prepare the pinch weld for the new windscreen. This makes sure that the new windscreen can fit within the pinch weld, and that the pinch weld can fully and properly hold the windscreen.

Applying Urethane to the Pinch Weld

Urethane is a substance that acts like glue to hold the windscreen in place. After the pinch weld is cleaned, urethane is quickly and evenly applied to its edges. This ensures that the urethane does not dry or begin to set before the new windscreen is put in place.

Installing the New Windscreen

After the clean pinch weld has been coated with urethane, the new windscreen is carefully fitted over your vehicle, adjusted to fit the correct place within the pinch weld. Once it is in the right place, the windscreen is pushed into place, typically using bars and suction cups, and held in position for a few minutes so that the urethane sets around the windscreen. Once the urethane starts setting, the suction cups are removed to allow the windscreen to completely cure. Though the curing time can vary depending on the type of urethane used and the weather outdoors, this is usually a fast process– most vehicles can be driven within an hour of the windscreen installation.
