How To Change Lexus RC Engine Oil

As a Lexus RC owner, one of the most important and fundamental aspects of car maintenance is performing regular oil changes. Engine oil is like the lifeblood of your car; it lubricates various engine components to reduce friction and prevent overheating. Over time, engine oil breaks down and accumulates particles that can damage the engine, necessitating routine oil changes.

  • For the average driver, it's recommended to change your Lexus RC engine oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.
  • Check your owner's manual for specific recommendations for your vehicle model and driving conditions.

Gathering Necessary Tools and Supplies

Before beginning the oil change process, you'll need to gather some necessary supplies. These include:

  • The correct engine oil for your Lexus RC, typically synthetic 0W-20, but please verify in your owner's manual.
  • An oil filter that is compatible with your Lexus RC.
  • An oil filter wrench.
  • An oil drain pan.
  • A socket set.
  • A jack and jack stands or car ramps for safely elevating the vehicle.
  • Shop rags or paper towels for cleanup.

Preparing the Car

Before you start, make sure the car is parked on a flat surface and the engine is cooled down to avoid any potential burns.

  • Place the car in park or gear (if manual) and engage the parking brake for safety.
  • Using your jack, carefully elevate your car to a suitable height, and then position the jack stands or ramps for stability.
  • Locate the drain plug and oil filter. They're typically on the underside of the engine. Use your vehicle's manual if you're unsure.

Draining the Old Oil

Now, you're ready to begin the process of draining the old engine oil.

  • Position your oil drain pan underneath the oil drain plug.
  • Using the correct socket, carefully loosen and remove the oil drain plug, allowing the oil to drain into the pan.
  • It's advisable to wear gloves during this process, as used engine oil can be harmful to the skin.

Replacing the Oil Filter

While the oil is draining, you can begin the process of changing the oil filter.

  • Using your oil filter wrench, remove the old oil filter.
  • Before installing the new filter, apply a small amount of new oil to the gasket on the top of the filter. This helps ensure a proper seal.
  • Screw the new oil filter into place by hand, then tighten it with the oil filter wrench.

Adding the New Oil

With the old oil drained and the new filter installed, you can now add the new engine oil.

  • Replace and tighten the drain plug using the socket.
  • Locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine, remove it, and insert a clean funnel.
  • Pour the new engine oil into the engine via the funnel, making sure not to exceed your car's oil capacity.
  • Replace the oil filler cap securely.

Checking the Oil Level and Cleanup

After adding the new oil, it's important to check the oil level and cleanup.

  • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then turn it off and let it sit for a couple of minutes.
  • Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, then reinsert it fully.
  • Pull the dipstick out again and check the oil level. It should be within the 'safe' markers on the dipstick.
  • Finally, make sure to properly dispose of the old oil and oil filter at a recycling center or auto parts store.
