How To Troubleshoot A Loose Lexus Steering Wheel

If, while you are traveling at high speed – or any other time, for that matter – you experience a loose Lexus steering wheel, you wouldn't be the first. Any driver, of almost any car, can encounter looseness in the steering column. What is the problem? The tires may be damaged. Or part of the chassis system may be to blame.

Let's take a look at what causes loose steering and what you should do if you experience a loose Lexus steering wheel.

Loose Steering Causes

If you notice the steering is loose on your vehicle, the following could have something to do with it:

  • A worn rod
  • Damaged bearings
  • Wheel deviation
  • Problem with the suspension system
  • Brake problems
  • During operation, lug nuts came loose
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Wheels are unbalanced
  • Tire pressure could be inappropriate
  • Tires are old and worn

Troubleshooting

Frequently, when steering is loose, you may also notice shaking in the steering column while driving. To ensure comfortable driving and traffic safety, the following three parts can be checked:

Tires – Nonstandard tire stiffness can cause problems with steering due to issues with contact surface. On the road, all the wheels of the car aren't working together. This shakes the entire vehicle because deflection is created. It's particularly noticeable in the steering wheel. To balance the drive system and adjust compression, take your vehicle to a garage.

Rubber feet – Inside the tripod, rubber pads can become worn when used for a long time. This can affect the engine and can cause the car to move. On the chassis, minor effects can also be noticed. When moving, steering wheel vibration is caused by the rubber tripod in this case. To see if the rubber feet and tripod are the problem, bring your vehicle to a professional garage. They can determine what parts need to be repaired or replaced.

Ball joint – One crucial element of the steering system is the ball joint. To see if this part needs to be replaced, bring your vehicle to a dealership service center. Failure with the ball joint can cause problems with loss of control, steering wheel vibration, or nonstandard driving.

Heavy Steering

If, rather than shaking or looseness, your steering feels "heavy," a couple of details can be checked including the steering wheel itself and the power steering pump.

Check the oil in your car and your power steering pump for proper levels of fluid. If an internal problem exists, this will be a job for a technician.

A problem with the steering wheel itself could involve lubrication, damage, joints, or an abraded steering wheel. Once again, a technician should be able to determine the problem and rectify it.
