How To Select Driving Modes In Lexus Cars

Most modern cars have specific drive modes, including Lexus hybrid vehicles, but why are they used and how do they work? Drive modes give you the ability to decide how you wish to operate the vehicle based on multiple circumstances.

The Purpose of Lexus Drive Modes

The majority of Lexus vehicles today are controlled via their ECU, or Engine Control Unit. This is a system which alters the vehicle’s primary components such as its suspension, engine, transmission, braking and steering. This has enabled the manufacturer to provide multiple drive modes that can alter the handling of the vehicle along with its efficiency and dynamics, all by pressing a single button.

For instance, during a commute, you might decide that you want your Lexus to drive in a manner that maximizes its fuel efficiency. However, during a longer trip, you may instead want faster responses with greater performance.

Using Drive Modes in Your Lexus

By default, most Lexus vehicles will be set to a “Normal” drive mode. However, there are multiple “on demand” modes that can be chosen through its Drive Mode button, which may vary slightly depending on the specific model. The vehicle can be set to a relaxing or dynamic mood, which will either increase its performance or prioritize its fuel economy, emissions and efficiency. The four most popular drive modes are NORMAL, EV, ECO and Sport.

EV Mode

When you start up your Lexus and operate it at speeds lower than 45km/h, it should automatically function within the EV mode, which means that it is operating primarily with the electric motor. This mode can also be manually selected, but may not be available to those driving a moderate hybrid vehicle.

EV mode is best for those who are driving the vehicle in urban environments where they want minimal noise with no NOX, CO2 or particulate emissions. Additionally, because its petrol engine will be deactivated during this mode, this means that EV will substantially reduce the total fuel consumption of the vehicle.

ECO Mode

With this mode, both the pedal input and throttle response will be lowered along with the A/C temperature control so that fuel economy is enhanced. Based on the local driving conditions, this mode will aid drivers who want a relaxed form of operation, and will further lower the fuel consumption.

Sport Mode

As the name suggests, Sport mode emphasizes dynamic handling and will maximize the vehicle’s maneuverability and performance. It accomplishes this by boosting the supply voltage and general powertrain output. The engine revs will be higher, as well as the EPS (Electric Power Steering) and throttle.

Additionally, the Sport mode is less intrusive when it comes to the traction control and vehicle stability. This means that the drivers will be able to maximize the performance of their Lexus without limitation. The instruments for drivers have also been synchronized based on mode selection which makes the vehicle easier to operate.
