How To Identify Lexus Premature Brake Disc Wear

There are lots of important parts on a car. If anything fails, others can fail as a result. Worst-case scenario, if something as crucial as your brakes fail, you're in for a bad day, indeed! Slowing and stopping can become impossible when brakes completely fail. Fortunately, there are warning signs that point to it being time to replace pads and/or discs. If you're hard on your brakes, discs/pads may wear prematurely. Unless you don't mind having your brakes serviced more often than needed, you may want to change your driving habits.

Note: Friction brakes are on many cars today, probably including your Lexus. The car comes to a halt courtesy of contact between two material types. These types of brakes can also be referred to as drum brakes or disc brakes.

Is It Time to Change Your Brake Discs?

The lifespan of your brakes can depend a lot on your driving habits. Some people are simply harder on their brakes than others. Shortly, we'll tell you how many miles you can expect from both discs and pads. Remember, it is possible to change your pads without needing to change your discs. But you have to catch the wear before the pad is completely worn through.

At the slightest unusual sound coming from your brakes, schedule your car for maintenance.

Identifying Brake Disc Wear

Brake discs and brake pads wear differently. Very generally speaking, you can expect the following:

  • 80,000 220,000 miles from your brake discs
  • 25,000 to 60,000 miles for your brake pads

But how do you know if your brakes are wearing out? If, when you brake, you hear a grinding noise, it could mean that replacement of your discs or pads is in order. A metal wear indicator is included on brake pads. Its purpose is, when it comes in contact with the brake disc, to make a noise. Unfortunately, if you hear this noise, you'll probably need to replace the discs because the pads are worn to their maximum extent.

Brake Disc Maintenance Tips

As far as maintenance goes, your brakes pretty much tend to take care of themselves. They wear out at a certain point, however, so they need to be changed. How you drive can go a long way toward keeping your brakes useful for as long as possible.

Grinding to an abrupt halt or fast slowing will wear your brakes out faster than usual. To make them last longer, engine braking and gentle braking go a long way.
