How To Check Mileage For A Used Lexus

If you're purchasing a used/preowned vehicle, you're going to want to know how far it's been driven. Possibly, you’re considering a preowned Lexus? That's a great choice. Do you know how to check the mileage for a used Lexus?

Keep in mind, when you see the advice below, that different vehicles – makes and models – will have varying display systems when it comes to mileage (the odometer). If you're having a lot of trouble figuring out how to check the mileage on the preowned vehicle you're considering, ask the seller/dealership to assist you. You may also want to look at the owner’s manual. A plethora of useful information can be found in those pages.

Just as an example, we're going to look at the 2018 Lexus RX 350 and how to check the mileage.

To the left of the steering wheel, locate the OD RESET Button. (Right behind the steering wheel, it's on the dash, though it may seem slightly hidden.)

  • Depress the button once and you should see a display for the ODO. To the right, you'll see the number of miles. This reading should denote the number of miles this car has travelled.
  • You can view the miles on Trip A if you press the button another time.
  • Check the miles for Trip B by pressing it again.

Has the Odometer Been Tampered With?

You may have heard of sellers or some dealerships turning back the odometer on a car. This prevents the perspective buyer from knowing just how many miles the car has traveled. A higher price can be asked as a result.

How do you know if the mileage on an odometer is actually accurate? To determine whether the genuine mileage is displayed, you may explore these options:

  • Check the wear and tear on the vehicle. The mileage that the odometer displays, and the condition of the car should coincide relatively closely. Check body condition, engine condition, interior condition, etc.
  • Consider average mileage. Low mileage is considered to be roughly 10,000 miles per year or less. Truthfully, roughly 14,263 miles are put on by Americans annually. How does that compare with the age of the car you're considering? If it's excessively low or high, you'll want to know why.
  • Check any paper documentation that may have been filled out when the car was being repaired or maintained. Some people keep these in the glove box. In some instances, the mileage of the car will be reported somewhere in the paperwork. Check the date and see how it coincides with the mileage you see displayed on the odometer.
  • On some of today's high-tech, digital vehicles, turning back the odometer will cause an error in the system. In this case, the "Error Message" would be clearly displayed. Of the mileage, you may also see an asterisk (*) indicating an inconsistency.
