2022 Lexus ES vs. 2022 Volkswagen Arteon

Lexus has been trying to compete with German carmakers for a long time, but it has yet to really succeed. Lexus is trying again with the ES, and the 2022 model is a significant upgrade over its predecessor. However, it looks like Lexus may have jumped the gun by introducing this car in 2022 when we may see an all-new 2022 Volkswagen Arteon that could make this comparison difficult to judge.

Design & Style

  • Exterior Design

The 2022 Lexus ES has a more aggressive look than the Arteon. The front end is dominated by a large grille and headlights that reach back into the fenders. You'll also find side vents, while below, you'll see diffusers and exhausts designed to look like they were carved out of metal. The Arteon has smoother lines, with its fascia pulled back toward the hood (although there's some swooping at the top). It's also got a smaller grille than either of its competitors, with less chrome around it as well. At night or in poor weather conditions, this makes it harder to see when you're looking at the road ahead of you—a problem that could be mitigated if Volkswagen had opted for LED headlights instead of halogen bulbs on all trims (the Sport trim gets LED lights).

  • Interior Design

The 2022 Lexus ES has a very high-quality interior with an ergonomic and comfortable design. The dashboard is sleek yet functional, with a central touchscreen that provides easy access to all the vehicle's controls. The car also comes standard with Apple CarPlay, which allows you to use your iPhone's apps on the vehicle's large touchscreen display. A wireless phone charger is also included if you have a compatible smartphone.

The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon has an excellent interior as well—it won't disappoint in this area! The cabin feels roomy despite being relatively compact for its size class. There are two USB ports located in each row of seats so everyone can keep their devices charged up throughout long trips (and you don't need an adapter since they're Type C). Additionally, there are two 12-volt outlets for powering laptops or other accessories where there aren't any USB ports available at all—one of these outlets is located near the front passenger seat, so passengers won't have far to reach when using their own electronic devices.

Technology & Safety

The 2022 Lexus ES will come equipped with a standard rearview camera and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is also available with these features, but only as an optional feature. Both vehicles offer a suite of driver assistance systems: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert.

The 2022 Lexus ES and the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon have automatic headlights that you can turn on or off by flipping a switch on your steering wheel.

Performance

The ES 350 comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 302 horsepower, while the Arteon features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower. Both engines have plenty of power to get you around town, but they'll also easily take on long road trips.

The Bottom Line

The 2022 Lexus ES wins this one, though it's by a small margin. It has better performance, better interior comfort, and more advanced technology. The Arteon is comparable in terms of its build quality but could be better. If you're looking for something with more practicality and are on the fence about which to buy, the ES is your best pick.
