How To Replace Lexus NX Headlights

If you're a car buyer or enthusiast interested in maintaining your Lexus NX, you may need to replace the headlights at some point. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of replacing Lexus NX headlights, helping you maintain optimal visibility and safety on the road. The procedure is relatively simple and can save you time and money compared to visiting a professional mechanic.

Preparation

Before starting the headlight replacement process, gather the necessary tools and materials. You will need:

  • New Lexus NX headlight bulbs
  • A flathead screwdriver
  • A Phillips-head screwdriver
  • A clean cloth or rag
  • A pair of latex gloves (optional)

Ensure your Lexus NX is parked on a level surface with the engine off and the parking brake engaged. Allow the vehicle to cool down for at least 30 minutes if it has been driven recently to avoid burns from hot surfaces.

Step 1: Access the Headlight Assembly

Open the hood of your Lexus NX by pulling the hood release lever located near the driver's side door. Secure the hood in place using the hood prop rod. The headlight assembly is located at the front of the engine compartment on both sides of the grille.

Step 2: Locate the Headlight Bulb

With the hood open, locate the headlight bulb you wish to replace. The Lexus NX has separate bulbs for the high beam and low beam headlights. Identify the correct bulb by referring to your vehicle's owner's manual or checking the markings on the headlight assembly.

Step 3: Remove the Dust Cover

Most Lexus NX models feature a dust cover protecting the headlight bulb. To remove the dust cover, turn it counterclockwise and pull it away from the headlight assembly. Set it aside in a safe location to prevent damage or loss.

Step 4: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

Before removing the old headlight bulb, disconnect the electrical connector. Press down on the release tab and gently pull the connector away from the bulb.

Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb

Grab the old headlight bulb bottom and turn it counterclockwise to release it from the socket. Carefully pull the bulb out and set it aside for proper disposal.

Step 6: Install the New Bulb

Before handling the new headlight bulb, put on a pair of latex gloves or use a clean cloth to avoid getting any oils from your skin on the glass. Oils can cause hotspots on the bulb, leading to a shorter lifespan. Remove the new bulb from its packaging and insert it into the socket, aligning the tabs or notches. Once aligned, twist the bulb clockwise until it locks into place.

Step 7: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

Carefully reconnect the electrical connector to the new headlight bulb, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

Step 8: Replace the Dust Cover

Reattach the dust cover by aligning it with the headlight assembly and turning it clockwise until it locks into position.

Step 9: Test the New Headlight

Before closing the hood, start your Lexus NX and test the new headlight to ensure it is functioning properly. If the light does not turn on, double-check the electrical connector and the bulb installation to ensure everything is secure and properly aligned. If the issue persists, consult a professional mechanic for further diagnosis.
